Marketing Yourself – Building Your Personal Brand

Posted

Building a positive personal brand is essential for long time professional success.  Remember, anything you put on social media can be viewed at a later date.   However, using social media responsibly isn’t just about protecting your privacy and reputation.  It can be used to build your personal brand. Are you putting your best foot forward when it comes to potential employment?  The following discusses a few ways to develop an online brand that leads to interactions and opportunities offline.

Be Real.
Using multiple social media platforms allows you to paint a picture of who you are by sharing your experiences.  In order to truly connect with your digital community, it’s important that you be authentic. Your personal voice should be the foundation for your brand.

Share Your Value.
Take a minute to think about what sets you apart from your peer group.  What are your, goals, strengths, and passions?  In order for you to stand out, you have to recognize what makes your brand different from others. Share those strengths and passions with others who value those things.  By doing so, you’ll become part of a community to which you can easily add value.

Optimize Your Profiles.
Create professional Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter accounts.  Conduct a Google search to make sure you own your online name.  If you don’t own your name, then you risk leaving your online reputation in the hands of someone else.  Post information relevant to the industry you’re in.  This can be news articles, industry blogs, or even podcasts. Fill out your profiles completely to include all interests that are relevant to you. If you join in on the right conversations, and get your name out there, your online profiles will become visible to more people.

Create Value Adding Content.
You cannot build a personal brand simply by tweeting and sharing other people’s content.  In order to remain relevant, you must also create your own content.  A well-written blog is a great way to produce and share relevant content with your network.   Frequency and consistency help build your credibility in the workplace.  Just remember to think before you post.  The internet is like a copy machine, and anything you posts becomes permanent.  Having a blog can help expand your network beyond your immediate peer group and position you as a thought leader in your industry.

Make Connections.
Try to meet the important people in your field.  Send them an email, connect on LinkedIn, or Tweet them.  Have your elevator pitch created and validated.  Personal branding is about making it easy for people to build a relationship with you by being proactive.  Opening conversations with people in your industry can lead to greater opportunities down the road.

In order to be relevant in today’s information-rich world, you have to have an online presence. Whether you post about yourself or someone else does, once it’s placed on the internet, you have a presence.  Don’t leave your online reputation in the hands of someone else.   Take control of your personal brand now.

Having an established online presence can also be very helpful when looking for new job opportunities.
