When Is the Right Time to Hire Temp Help?

Posted

When you run a business, payroll is a large part of your monthly budget and can be very costly if you are over or under staffed.  In order to keep unnecessary costs to a minimum, it is important to have an understanding of how to properly manage your staffing.   Doing so will ensure that you’re properly staffed and get a project finished as efficiently as possible.

  1. When You Notice a Bottleneck.
In the manufacturing and construction industries especially, a bottleneck in your production process can severely damage your output.  As soon as you start to see patterns of where production is being halted, brainstorm a solution for how to fix it.  Often times the answer is hiring one or two new temporary employees that are already skilled in the job task.  Having one or two extra hands around can help smooth over the production process and ensure that the bottleneck doesn’t reoccur.
  2. When You Know You’re About to Get Busy.
Every organization has its ebbs and flows.  Most likely these ebbs come in the form of a predicted busy season. Whether it’s rush to get apartment buildings completely by the beginning of the school year, or a surge in oil usage around the holiday, it still needs to be accounted for.  Don’t wait to find help until you’re drowning with overload.  Instead, use a staffing agency to hire seasonal employees. You can use them for the duration of your busy season, and their firm will find more work for them when you no longer need their help.
  3. When You Have Requests Outside Your Skill Set.
In a technical field, you’ll often get requests that are outside your skill set.  Don’t automatically say no.  You’ll also come up with great ideas of your own that you need help implementing.  With temporary or contract workers, you can tap into the resources you need, when you need them.  Many temporary employees have advanced skill sets that you only need a few times a year.  It makes much more sense to hire that skill for a specific project instead of paying for it to not be used, a couple months down the road.
  4. When an Employee Leaves Unexpectedly.
Even though you try your best to minimize turnover, sometimes employees quit abruptly.  Usually when this happens, you’re overwhelmed and don’t have the time and energy to look for someone to permanently fill the position. A staffing agency is able to provide a new employee within 24 to 48 hours of your request.  You can then choose to let the agency take care of the interviewing and hiring process or have the employee serve as in interim employee until you find a great hire.
  5. When You Need Training Resources.
If you’re taking most of your time to train your staff on new tools and software, you’re not able to focus on your core job duties.  Let a staffing firm help. Bringing in an experienced contract employee can offer you the knowledge and capabilities you need on a temporary basis.  You’ll be surprised how many doors are opened up when you have the correct staff to kick off a new project.  Staffing agencies also offer training resources when you need to hire on a large number of employees quickly and don’t have time to train them.  The agency will perform training itself to make sure the employees are ready to work for you.
