Understanding Appreciation Throughout Your Workforce

Your employees are not only hardworking individuals, but also the backbone of your company. While you appreciate everything they do, but you might be internalizing the feelings more than you realize. ‘Tis the season to take inventory of everything in your life that you are thankful for, so use these tips to show your workforce how happy you are to have them as a team.

4 Ways to Show Gratitude to Your Workforce

1. Say ‘Thank You’

Thank you; two small words that can really go a long way. Your employees are not mind-readers, so if you say ‘thank you’ on an infrequent basis, they might feel overlooked or taken for granted. Make sure this is not the case by letting them know their efforts are appreciated.

An effective ‘thank you’ can be delivered in many forms — a handwritten note, an email or face-to-face. Choose the route that best fits the situation and your company culture, and get to work. Drive the point home by personalizing the message, so each employee really feels the warmth.

2. Treat Them With Kindness

Being friendly to employees is one of the best ways to show your appreciation. From an employee’s perspective, working for an unkind or disrespectful boss is unpleasant and degrading. You might not even be aware of your own behavior, so take a step back and put yourself in their shoes. If you are not pleased with what you see, adjust your attitude.

3. Listen to Their Ideas

As the boss, you can have everything your way, but this may not be the best approach. Your employees are smart people with great ideas, so let their voices be heard. Not only will this benefit your company, but also show respect for their thoughts and opinions.

4. Make a Special Holiday Gesture

Showing appreciation to your team is something that should be done year-round. However, the holiday season heightens the need to let people know their hard work has not gone unnoticed. Send the message loud and clear by doing something really nice for your team. There are plenty of options for every budget, such as buying lunch, taking them out for a group activity or giving them a bonus and/or extra time off.
