Tips for Keeping Your Skills Current

Have you ever wondered how some individuals continually end up on top? Is it luck? Were they born with natural skills? Were they blessed with great connections or given a head start?

Maybe, but more than likely the people on the top got there through hard work and dedication. If you surveyed 100 of the top performers in your industry, you would most likely find several common traits. Among the top of that list would be that each of the top performers is a life-long learner.

Want to advance your career?
It’s very important to keep your skills up to date so you can perform at a high level and advance—just like the other top performers we just mentioned. Here are tips on staying current in any field:

Find a mentor.
One of the best ways to learn more about your field is to consult with someone who has been in your shoes. Seek out the advice of more experienced co-workers and management. You can learn from their past mistakes and experiences, and use that information to more quickly advance in your current role.

Take on special projects.
When an opportunity to expand your role presents itself, take it! One of the best ways to continue learning is to take on new challenges. Actively seek out special project teams or tasks that you can spearhead. You may have to put in some additional hours and off-work research time but it will pay dividends in the end.

Join associations.
Industry trade associations are an essential part of every life-long learner’s plan. Seek out local and national associations in your field. For example, if you’re an Architect, join the American Institute of Architects ( You’ll have access to a wealth of learning resources, stay current on new technology, and discover what’s happening on the bleeding edge of your industry.

Cross train.
Take the time to truly understand the roles that others in your organization plan. Seek out cross-training opportunities offered within your organization. You’ll be amazed at how learning about how other departments operate can positively affect your own performance. Not to mention that getting cross trained can open a new world of advancement opportunities!

Go back to school.
Last but not least, consider going back to school to take new classes or earn new certifications. If you’re in a quickly advancing field, this may be a requirement to advance.
