Continuing Education Opportunities for Engineers


Whether you’re a civil, electrical, mechanical or other type of engineer, you know that continuing education is a necessity for advancing your career and maintaining your license. Continuing education requirements for your license may depend on the state in which you’re practicing as well as the discipline.

To help you navigate the requirements for CE credits, here are a few resources:

NSPE Chart of CE Requirements
The National Society of Professional Engineers has developed a great chart that outlines the CE Requirements for Engineers in every state.  The chart includes the total number of hours needed, renewal schedule, and any special requirements needed.

State Licensing Boards
In addition to the National Association, several states have their own professional governing boards with an array of helpful resources.  Here are links to several state boards, and others can be found through a quick Google search of “Professional Licensing Board in [state]”:

Once you have an understanding of the requirements needed to renew your license, there are a variety of different resources to help earn CE credits:

National Engineering Associations
Many of the national associations have full sections on their websites dedicated to licensure and CE credits.  Join these associations and take advantage of these wonderful resources. 

Engineering Conferences
There are dozens of conferences each year located throughout the country. Engineers can earn CE credits from attending classes at these conferences.  RealStreet attends the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) and Society for American Military Engineers (SAME) conferences and both provide great opportunities for CE credits. Finally, a simple online search for “CE Credits for Engineers” will return dozens of providers that offer online courses, training and materials.  Before paying for a course, however, be sure to confirm that it meets your state and profession requirements for credit.
