5 Signs Your HR Staff Needs Help

Posted

Your Human Resources staff is the heart and soul of your entire organization. They are responsible for everything from hiring the best person for each open position, to keeping employees happy and engaged. HR has a number of large responsibilities, so it is understandable when personnel in this department get a bit stressed from time to time. However, it is important to take note if HR related issues go on for a prolonged period of time, as additional assistance might be needed.

5 Signs Your HR Staff Needs Help

If any off the following five situations sound familiar, take this as a warning sign that your HR staff could use an extra hand — or maybe even a few:

  1. Long Time-to-Fill: According to the job site indeed.com, approximately two-fifths of U.S. jobs are filled within 30 days. If your HR team fails to meet this mark, there’s a 57% chance the position will remain open for three months or more. If you notice a trend of open positions remain unfilled for over a month, it’s time to step in and provide assistance.
  2. Sky-High Turnover Levels: Something is definitely wrong if your company has become a revolving door of talent. It’s not only frustrating to be perpetually short-staffed, but also very expensive. If your turnover levels are uncomfortably high, your HR team could be hiring the wrong people. Consider offering additional training to help them learn how to choose the right candidates.
  3. Obsolete Onboarding Programs: Simply having an onboarding program is not enough. If your HR team has not had time to update the program, it will likely serve as a deterrent to new hires. According to the Department of Labor (DOL), 66% of new hires are more likely to remain with a company for at least three years if they participate in a structured onboarding process.
  4. Improper Protocols: In addition to hiring new team members, your HR department has a number of other pertinent responsibilities. If things like regulatory compliance paperwork and correcting employee performance issues are falling through the cracks, you need to take action. The last thing you want is to have to deal with violations from state and federal agencies or major performance issues that could have been avoided.
  5. Low Employee Morale: HR is responsible for making your company a great place to work. If your employees seem distracted, disengaged and unmotivated, this is a major red flag. Look into what is causing the change and take steps to help your team. Unhappy employees are inefficient, unproductive and often don’t stay with a company very long.
