Four Tips to Increase Your Focus at Work

Posted

If you have trouble concentrating at work, you are not alone. Many people find their mind wandering from time to time. This can impede productivity if it happens too often. Thankfully, there are ways to boost your concentration. A simple shift in your way of thinking or work habits can get you back on track. For example:

1. Eliminate Distractions Within Your Control

When you’re struggling to remain focused, even the smallest distraction can hinder your productivity. Increase your ability to concentrate by eliminating as many distractions as possible. For example, silence unnecessary smartphone or email notifications or close the door to your office.

2. Schedule Tasks Wisely

If you are like many people, your productivity peaks at certain times each day. If you are most productive in the morning, cater to this by completing tasks that require the most effort before lunch. Save the easier, less taxing assignments for the afternoon hours, when your energy level dips.

3. Take Breaks

On the surface, breaks might seem counterproductive, but they can be essential to success. Your mind can only work so hard, for so long, before it needs a rest. Grabbing a cup of coffee, taking a lunch break or going for an afternoon walk can recharge your batteries and enable you to return to your desk refreshed and ready to go.

4. Delegate

It can be tempting to do everything yourself. After all, you know that you will do it correctly and training someone else will take time. That being said, if you have too much on your plate, delegate what you can. The time you invest in training others can have a significant payoff, as it can enable you to focus on more strategic activities moving forward.
