Q4 is Upon Us. How Will You End the Year Strong?

Posted

The air is cooler, the leaves are changing, and the pumpkin spice lattes have hit the coffee shops.  It’s hard to believe, but as September wraps up, Q4 is upon us.  It’s time to focus on wrapping up loose ends before the busy holiday season, ensuring that you have met your professional goals, and ending 2014 strong.

If switching to a new job was one of your goals this year, it’s not too late.  The fourth quarter could very well be the right time for your next career move.  Here are a few ways you can optimize your job search in Q4 to finish out 2014 with a job offer.

Get a head start over the competition.

Kicking your job search off early in Q4 can give you an edge over other workers who make looking for a new job their New Year’s resolution.  You’ll have less competition for job openings and a better chance of your resume not getting lost in a gigantic stack on the hiring manager’s desk.

Network at holiday parties.

The holiday season is filled with dinner parties and happy hours for family, friends, businesses, social groups and volunteer organizations.   This is a perfect time to chat with other partygoers and meet new acquaintances who might lead you to a new job opportunity.  The key to holiday party networking is to be genuine and sincere.

Take advantage of seasonal opportunities.

Many industries hire extra staff as a lead-up to the busy holiday season.  According to a survey by CareerBuilder.com, thirty-two percent of employers plan to hire temporary or contract workers in the fourth quarter. A temporary position has the potential of leading to permanent employment by the New Year. Twenty-two percent of companies report that they will transition temporary staff into permanent employees before the end of the year.

Benefit from budget rules.

Many departments receive an allotment for hiring at the beginning of the fiscal year.  If they don’t use those funds before year-end, they run the risk that this piece of their budget will be reduced the following year. This can work in your favor, as many hiring managers will try to pull in a few last minute hires before their budget season ends.
