Networking During the Holidays

Posted

Networking is a never-ending process throughout your career. After all, it gives you the ability to connect with other architecture, engineering and construction professionals, the chance to learn about new opportunities and it provides access to valuable information that could help you thrive. The holiday season is the perfect time to reach out and grow your network.

Five Ways to Nurture and Expand Your Network This Holiday Season

1. Socialize

The holiday season provides copious opportunities to socialize. From company parties to get-togethers with family and friends, there are chances to expand upon and maintain a professional network. As these events are often communal in nature, attendees are typically more social with one another. Make the most of the festivities!

2. Attend Professional Networking Events

While there is no denying that technology as enabled individuals to efficiently connect and effectively grow and maintain their relationships, it should not completely eliminate face-to-face communication. Professional networking events create an ideal environment for forging connections. Typically, it is easier and faster to establish a connection when you can converse in real-time and pick up on visual cues, such as changes in body language. Plus, the jovial atmosphere can help you break the ice.

3. Send Greetings

Another great way to maintain your network is to send cards or gifts. Alternatively, reaching out to contacts via social sites is an easy and cost-effective way to send greetings. These methods enable you to stay in touch without the appearance of reaching out of the blue. Ensure that your LinkedIn account is updated and tailored to the type of opportunities that you are currently pursing or interested in obtaining down the road. That way, your contacts see your most recent accomplishments and they are able to connect your experience and goals to opportunities in their purview.

4. Help a Co-Worker

For many, the holiday season is an exhausting time, due in no small part to personal commitments and proximity to the year’s end. If you notice a co-worker or manager struggling with their workload, it might benefit you to offer a helping hand. Assuming that you have the bandwidth and ability to assist, you may get the chance to learn a new skill, expand your experience and work with new people. Helping those around you is also an excellent way to exhibit your initiative and highlight your teamworking skills.

5. Volunteer

Volunteering often affords the opportunity to interact with a variety of people and at all levels, from entry-level to management. Be mindful of who you work with and who you meet along the way. Each new connection is an opportunity to grow your network and achieve your career goals.
